LAZY H RANCH

JAMESTOWN, CA

About the Lazy H Ranch

The Lazy H Ranch originally began as an endeavor by Caroline and Richard Hoffman in 1980.  At the time, it was nothing more than a single mobile home and five acres of rolling hills and trees.  Caroline and Richard’s three children—Cindy, Tom, and Peter—and their families spent Thanksgivings and weekends playing horseshoe, building zip lines, and watching a little bit of TV.  The old mobile home was eventually replaced by a new double wide, making Thanksgiving and weekends more comfortable.  Other additions and improvements to the property include a garage in 1985 and a new 700 ft well in 1990.

In 1997, Richard decided
to sell the Ranch as it was too much work to maintain.  The Ranch was put on the market for sale, but the family wanted it to be kept in the family; so Caroline and Richard sold the Lazy H Ranch to Mitzi and Tom Hoffman.  The Ranch is still a place for the whole family to visit, and Thanksgivings seem to grow with Caroline and Richard’s grandchildren.  It didn’t take Mitzi and Tom long to realize the potential the Lazy H Ranch had, and they soon began expanding.  In 1997, they replaced the well, holding tank, and pump.  The Bunkhouse, another single mobile home, was purchased from a camp in Saratoga in the year 2000.  The kitchen was gutted, and bunk beds, a refrigerator and microwave were added.  This made the Bunkhouse a favorite place to hang out, especially for watching movies, as well as a great place for the kids and their friends to crash.

In 2002, a friend's cattle, Buttercup and her mother, Daisy, were allowed to graze the land until Cowboy Tom realized that the Lazy H Ranch needed its own animals.  The first cow Tom purchased (in 2004) as Lazy H Ranch property was a black and white heifer appropriately named “Jackson” by Cowboy Tom’s youngest daughter, Sarah, and son, Phillip.  However, Jackson’s loneliness became clear and soon enough another heifer was purchased.  This time, it was a red
and white heifer named “Pumpkin” by Cowboy Tom’s oldest daughter, Rachel.  “The Girls” were bred with a heifer bull, named Bulldacious, and Jackson’s first calf, a heifer named Jasmine, was born in June 2005.  (Pumpkin suffered a miscarriage in April 2005.)

With cattle on any land, a corral and squeeze box were needed and built in 2005.  They've been put to good use for doctoring the cows and branding them with the official Lazy H brand.  Starting in 2005, the Lazy H Ranch became the home of 50 chickens, with approximately one egg per chicken per day.  The chicken coup was designed to look like a traditional red barn and an enclosed area was attached to allow the chickens to be free range.  The Lazy H Ranch became a Certified Egg Producer in the Tuolumne County of California and the State of California.  In late 2005, two pigmy goats (Pete and Repeat) found their new home at the Lazy H Ranch as well. Unfortunately, Repeat passed away shortly after arriving at his new home.  Since no ranch is complete without a large red barn, one was built to hold the hay and alfalfa for the cows.  The 4,000 square foot vegetable garden is starting to produce fruits and vegetables, which are great treats for the people and animals.

In late 2005, the Lazy H Ranch purchased a 6-year-old pregnant miniature horse named Winny.  On March 28, 2006, Winny gave birth to a filly named Sassy.  In April of 2006, the lonely goat, Pete, had some new friends arrive - three more pigmy goats named Ziggy, Mary-Kate, and Ashley.  Two guinea hens now roam the land, as well as a few barn cats.  More chickens were added as well, bringing the total up to about 100 layers.  Over Thankgiving of 2006, a pure breed American Shetland Pony, named Dusty, was also purchased.

In May of 2006, Chimmie and Poncho, two full-sized quarter horses were purchased, but did not live on the Ranch.  They were being boarded in the Bay Area so they can be available for Mitzi and Tom to take Riding and Roping lessons with.

On July 7, 2006, Pumpkin gave birth to a heifer named Daisy.  The same day, Jackson gave birth to a bull named Angus.  Surprisingly, six days later, Jackson gave birth to Angus's twin brother, Amos.

Chimmie became lame in early 2007, so he is now relaxing at the Ranch.  Latte, a pure bred quarter horse, was purchased in 2007 to enjoy riding lessons with Poncho.  He is also now relaxing at the Ranch.

In May of 2007, the miniature horse, Winny, gave birth to another filly named Lucy.  The chicken count was also raised to approximately 200 layers in early 2007.

On August 10, 2007, Pumpkin gave birth to her second heifer, named Ginger.  On August 14, 2007, Jackson gave birth to her second heifer, named Kayvona.

In late August of 2007, the Lazy H Ranch LLC purchased its first pure-bred registered angus bull, named JD Bulldozer (nicknamed "Bubbles"), and sold Angus and Amos at the Esclan Auction.  Unfortunately, Pete (one of the pigmy goats) passed away too.  It seems he missed Repeat too much.

On February 14, 2008, Jasmine gave birth to her first, a bull named Cupid.  Tragically, Cupid suffered from physical disabilities and could not walk.  He was put down in June of 2008.  However, a local, very young heifer named Lola, was in need of a mother, so she was purchased to bond with Jasmine.  Despite a couple difficulties to begin with, the two get along wonderfully now.

In February of 2008, a pure-bred Arabian gelding, named Amerikan Idol MLR was purchased.  Although he is a five-year-old, he has competed in many shows in the past, and will be performing with Mitzi Hoffman in many shows to come.  Amerikan Idol stays at the local stables with Poncho.

On July 29th of 2008, Jackson gave birth to a healthy and rambunctious heifer named Thriller.  A week later, on August 5th, Pumpkin gave birth to a healthy bull named Glatt.  Both calves are doing well.

From the basic one mobile home in 1980 to the multiple structures now on the five acres, it is clear that Mitzi and Tom’s vision has been one of expansion and pleasure in the use of the land.  The Lazy H Ranch is a place to put on your cowboy boots and hat, grab a carrot to feed the cows or put on galoshes to collect eggs from the coop.  You may also decide to shoot some archery or BB Guns next to the Bunkhouse.  Whatever you choose, you won’t be bored and you can never get too down and dirty at the Lazy H Ranch!
